Maintaining your Doodle’s coat is essential for keeping their fur healthy, tangle-free, and comfortable. At Dog 4 Dog Grooming, we want to show you the right way to use a slicker brush, metal comb, and line brushing technique so you can help your dog look their best between grooming appointments. For shorter coats (up to 1 ½ inches), we recommend brushing 1-2 times per week. For longer coats (over 1 ½ inches), a minimum of 3 brushing sessions per week is essential to prevent matting and tangle.
Doodle coats can easily mat and tangle if not regularly brushed. Mats can be painful for your dog, causing discomfort and skin irritation. Regular brushing helps:
Begin by gently brushing your Doodle’s coat with a slicker brush. This tool helps to remove loose hair and prevent mats.
Tip: Always brush in the direction of hair growth and avoid pressing too hard. A light touch is important to prevent skin irritation, especially around sensitive areas like the legs, belly, and behind the ears.
After using the slicker brush, follow up with a metal comb. This helps to catch any small tangles or mats the slicker brush might have missed.
Tip: Be gentle, and if you encounter any resistance, stop and work through the tangle with your fingers or a detangling spray before using the comb.
Line brushing is a method where you systematically work through your dog’s coat in small sections or lines, starting from the skin and moving outward. This technique ensures that you’re brushing out all layers of the coat, not just the surface, which is especially important for curly or dense Doodle coats.
In this video, we’ll demonstrate the proper technique for line brushing your fluffy companion to maintain a healthy, tangle-free coat.

Thorough Mat Prevention: Line brushing helps ensure you don’t miss any areas, especially close to the skin where mats tend to form. Effective for Thick Coats: Doodles have thick, curly coats that can hide tangles deep beneath the surface. Line brushing helps you reach all layers of the coat. Promotes Healthy Skin: This technique stimulates the skin and helps distribute natural oils, keeping your dog’s coat shiny and healthy.
While slicker brushes are great for removing tangles, pressing too hard can damage your dog’s skin. Slicker brushes have fine, close-set bristles that should glide through the coat, not dig into the skin. If your dog flinches or seems uncomfortable, you might be applying too much pressure.
