Doodles have risen in popularity very quickly, making them one of the most common types of dogs in the grooming salon. Unfortunately, not everyone in the dog sphere is in agreement on how to take care of these kinds of dogs. Breeders often advertise them as “low maintenance,” needing to only be groomed a few times a year. You should know, this is absolutely no where near the reality of owning a doodle - unless you want them to shaved naked three times a year. Without regular grooming and consistent brushing at home, these dogs often face severe matting. Matting is painful, stressful and can cause complications for your dog.
What is a “Doodle”? Any dog mixed with a poodle makes some form of Doodle - Goldendoodle, Bernedoodles, Labradoodle, etc. There is quite a bit of confusion about how to properly maintain the coat of a Doodle. Rightfully so, there is no breed standard for these dogs due them being a mixed breed, which means their coats all vary greatly.
Some Doodles have very dense, curly coats and others may even have an undercoat. The type of grooming that is best for YOUR dog can only be determined by their coat and how much work you want to put in at home. Another factor at play is how comfortable they are with the grooming process. We are here to help you discover the best grooming routine for your specific pup. The second shortest of the blades safe to use on the body leaves twice as much hair as the #10 blade at 1/8th of an inch. Gives more coverage but is still tight and short, suitable for summer. Low maintenance, no body brushing required. Recommended upkeep is every 6-8 weeks.
The #5 blade leaves 1/4 inches of hair on the body. It is short but still allows for some minor volume in the coat, just no curls. The most common “summer cut.” Low maintenance, no body brushing required. Recommended upkeep is every 6-8 weeks.
Just a little fluff and curl, the #4 blade leaves 3/8th of an inch on the body. Perfect for low maintenance between grooms but gives more of the doodle look. Low maintenance, minimal body brushing between grooms required. Recommended upkeep is 6-8 weeks.
The most common blade used! The #3 blade offers lower maintenance between grooms while still serving fluff and curl. It leaves 1/2 an inch of hair on the body. Low to medium maintenance, minimal body brushing between grooms required. Recommended upkeep is 4-6 weeks.
